Leaving deviantART

After 15 years on the site, I've decided to shut down my deviantART account, and it's a decision I've not made lightly. I've posted a lot of art, made some good friends, and even been a dA Core subscriber a time or two over the years, but things have changed there, and not for the better.

Getting the minor complaints out of the way first, nobody liked the new UI, or their new logo. I also absolutely hated their April Fools Day pranks so much that I actively avoided their site on April 1st for years. Even their llama badges got real annoying real quick.

But things have only gotten worse from there. deviantART has dropped the ball on several major developments in the art world. Back when NFTs were plaguing us, they introduced art theft protection features that notified users when some finance bro stole their art and minted it as an NFT. That feature was a great step in the right direction, and it should've been available to all users by default… but putting it behind a paywall and making it exclusive to dA Core users meant that step landed squarely on a banana peel.

My breaking point came when they fully embraced imitative AI, even going so far as to implement their own model, DreamUp, which is no doubt trained on dA users' data. Even worse, their AI suppression settings barely work, considering that they were still advertising paid AI content packs at me even though the images themselves were suppressed. Their anti-scraping settings work on an opt-out basis and functionally use the honor system, which is beyond ridiculous. It's basically an unlocked gate with no fence around it. I'm wholeheartedly against AI. It is not art; it's barely even media. It's content, and I mean that in the most derogatory sense of the word.

Protecting user data should be any website's number one priority, but with deviantART, I see that it's not. By locking important security features behind a paywall and fully embracing AI, deviantART has become actively hostile to artists. My work is not safe there, and if they won't protect my intellectual property, I will. So I've scrubbed my dA gallery, looked up all the people I watch and sought them out elsewhere online, and deactivated my account. I'll miss the people whose only online presence appeared to be on dA.

I'm still active on Furaffinity, Twitter (I'm never calling it "X,") and Bluesky, and I'll do my best to become more active here on Newgrounds (in fact, I was here first before signing up for dA, so it's time I get back to my roots.) I know AI is not allowed here, but I'll still take steps to protect my work from the tech bro menace.

Other News

Ending on a brighter topic, I recently upgraded my internet connection, so now I actually have the bandwidth to start streaming art and games. I've even been teaching myself 3D modeling in Blender by building my fursona, Foxy Gekkerson, as a 3D model. Once he's ready, I'll set him up as a v-tuber avatar for streams and recordings.

Until next time, stay foxy!

A lot of great things have been going on with me lately. My mood, energy, and motivation are all on the rise. I'm glad to say that I'm finally in a good enough place (both physically and mentally) to start drawing every day.

Because I'm finally making art on a regular basis, I can finally start streaming on a regular basis, too. Granted, my home internet is still slow, my phone's mobile hotspot won't let me stream in HD, and I still only get 15GB to play with each month, but I finally found a way to stream with a stable video. That being said, I'm going to keep to the old schedule I originally set for myself:

- Art on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5pm-7pm Eastern on Picarto

and

- Games on Fridays from 5pm-7pm Eastern on Twitch

If you follow me on Twitter or are subscribed to my YouTube channel, you can catch my streams there as well, even if you missed the initial broadcast (my art streams will only show up on YouTube if the art is completely SFW.)

Until next time, stay foxy!

In my Patreon campaign, I've set up reward tiers with the future in mind, especially for high-dollar and long-term backers once I really start making new cards. At this point, these high-dollar rewards mostly include what are effectively art commissions, as well as autographed poster prints of an ever-increasing roster of cards I'll have completed. These posters of my upcoming cards will range from 11"x17", all the way to 24"x36". Once I get a decent roster, I'd love to vend posters of my art at conventions. (I could probably offer posters of my old beta cards in the meantime, but no bigger than an 8"x10" print. They're nowhere near as big as what I've got now.) I also try to offer early access to speed paints if I remember to record them. What sort of other rewards would you like to see me offer on Patreon?

One thing I'd like to keep from the beta version of The Vulpine Tarot is the occasional nude character; tasteful, but not overly explicit (In terms of Newgrounds ratings, probably rated Mature,) which leads me to the next of my big questions: Do I offer prints of the NSFW cards at all, and if I do, how do I best go about acquiring proof of age from prospective buyers? Because of the NSFW nature of some of my cards, I'll eventually have to mark my Patreon as 18+ only, but I only have one backer at the moment (thank you for being my patron, bee tea dubs; you know who you are,) so I want to gather a few more backers before I do. In addition to selling prints at cons, I'd love to have an online shop outside of Patreon. If you're an artist who sells prints online, where did you set up shop?

PS~ I recently posted a new background experiment I did for The Vulpine Tarot on Patreon. Pledging as little as a dollar will get you early access to it before October 10th at 8AM EST.

I'm pretty sure I've had my Newgrounds account for longer than I've had my deviantART gallery, but I never really did anything here on Newgrounds aside from playing the occasional Flash game. It's time I dust this account off and finally start using it as a content creator. That being said, I'm not 100% sure what I want to do with it. I want to offer something unique to Newgrounds that I don't offer anywhere else. At the very least, I may end up posting the occasional extended uncut version of speedpaint videos and the like I can't post to YouTube, seeing as Newgrounds is more content-neutral on that front.

In the meantime, if you've stumbled across me here on Newgrounds, here are some other places where you can find me:

Twitter
deviantART
YouTube
Patreon
